The Atomium was built for Expo '58, the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. It was designed by engineer André Waterkeyn and architects André and Jean Polak. When I stood there, I realised I'd forgotten how tall it actually is! It's 102 m tall. The shape is that of a unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times, making it one of the strangest buildings in Europe according to CNN. You can't really argue with that...
